On October 13, the opening ceremony of the China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT) "Landscapes of Xuzhou, Blending Culture and Mining" Summer International School was held in Conference Room A604 of the School of Mines. Approved by the China Scholarship Council and jointly organized by the School of Mines and the International College, the program has attracted 34 faculty and students from Germany's Freiberg University of Mining and Technology and Poland's AGH University of Science and Technology. Attending the ceremony were Yanli Huang, Dean of the School of Mines; Honghai Li, Dean of the International College; Guichen Li, Dean of the Institute of Energy and Resources Strategic Development; and Xuehong Quan, Deputy Director of the University's Office of International Cooperation and Exchanges.
Yanli Huang, representing the School of Mines, extended a warm welcome to the visiting faculty and students. He introduced Xuzhou's profound historical culture and unique regional features, elaborated on the university's global disciplinary strengths and distinctive characteristics in the mining field, and highlighted the School's landmark research achievements in green coal mining and intelligent mine construction. Guichen Li provided a detailed overview of the existing collaboration with AGH University of Science and Technology in areas such as student overseas internships and joint academic research, as well as potential directions for future cooperation.
Student representatives Markus Schmidt from Freiberg University of Mining and Technology, and Kornel Frydrych and Wiktoria Tomeczek from AGH University of Science and Technology, expressed their sincere gratitude to CUMT for the meticulous organization of the summer school and shared their eager anticipation for the upcoming academic exchanges and cultural activities. Leeroy, a Zimbabwean student at the School of Mines, shared his six-year study experience at CUMT as a current student representative, expressing his deep affection and identification with Chinese culture and the university.
During the ceremony, Honghai Li, representing the organizing unit, presented the class flag to Lukasz Bednarek from AGH University of Science and Technology.
Following the opening ceremony, all students from the Class of 2023 International Mining Engineering Program (Mining Direction) of the School of Mines engaged in face-to-face interactions with the summer school participants and established communication groups to facilitate further exchange. Subsequently, the visiting faculty and students collectively visited the National Key Laboratory of Fine Coal Exploration and Intelligent Development, gaining firsthand insight into China's cutting-edge mining research platforms and technological achievements.
This summer international school represents the largest international delegation hosted by the School since the 2017 training program for mining engineers from India's SAIL company and the 2024 summer school for Navoi State University of Mining and Technologies from Uzbekistan. The implementation of the "going global" and "bringing in" dual strategy is a significant initiative by the School of Mines to promote international education and deepen exchanges and cooperation between Chinese and foreign universities. Moving forward, the School will continue to leverage such international exchange platforms to further enhance its competitiveness and influence in the global mining sector, injecting new momentum into the high-quality international development of mining disciplines.
