Academic Lecture by Professor Angel Palomo

On the morning of November 3, Professor Ángel Palomo, a renowned international expert in the field of silicate cement from the Spanish National Research Council, was invited to the School of Mines for an academic exchange. He delivered a lecture titled "Strategic Raw Materials in Making Cements for the Future" in Conference Room A509. The event was attended by Dean Yanli Huang, Hong Yan, Party Branch Secretary of the New Energy Department, Yuan Zhang, Head of the New Energy Department, along with faculty and students from the department.

Professor Palomo systematically introduced the research progress in low-carbon cement materials at Spain's Eduardo Torroja Institute of Construction Sciences. He shared his academic insights on efficient carbon reduction in cement, emphasized the importance and urgency of decarbonizing cement production, and highlighted the need for global collaborative efforts to drive the low-carbon cement revolution. He also clarified the critical role of adapting strategies to local conditions for promoting and applying low-carbon cement. Furthermore, Professor Palomo expressed his desire to deepen collaboration with the School of Mines in scientific research and talent development.

Yanli Huang extended a warm welcome to Professor Palomo and expressed the School's strong commitment in recent years to research on the resource utilization of coal-based solid waste. He emphasized active efforts to promote overseas visits for young faculty, joint doctoral training, and the recruitment of foreign experts in this field, all aimed at fostering diverse international academic exchanges. He looks forward to further deepening practical cooperation with research institutions in Belt and Road partner countries, including Spain.

After the lecture, attendees engaged in discussions with Professor Palomo on topics such as the carbon reduction effectiveness of alkali-activated cement, functional applications of low-carbon cement materials in mining, and the optimization of nanomaterial proportions in low-carbon cement.
